Singapore’s UV Index (UVI) score stands at a staggering 11.5, which makes our little red dot a country with one of highest UVI scores. In fact, our score is higher than that of Australia’s during the summer. Yeah, that’s not a good thing. Not at all. It just means that we’re at a greater risk of UV damage, possibly leading to severe conditions such as skin cancer, so that’s bound to scare the palest individuals.

Given such high UV radiation levels (summer all day errday), you’d think this nation would be a tad more diligent with sun protection. But let’s be honest here, when was the last time any of us actually heeded the EPA’s advice and reapplied sunscreen on our faces every two hours when we’re out and about? Even I don’t, because the thought of slathering a goopy layer of sunscreen over makeup is enough to make Kevyn Aucoin roll in his grave.

Not to worry, though. We’ve got three easy touchup tips on how you can give your complexion an extra layer of protection when you have to get through a long day out, or if you’re simply getting ready to brave the sun when you step out of the office for lunch – it’s blazing out there.

1. Select makeup with a built-in SPF

Perhaps the easiest way of reapplying sunscreen is to make sure your foundation has SPF in it. Cushion compacts are a prime example of this, and it’s why you’ll want Shu Uemura’s upcoming cushion in your bag at all times. Its lightweight formula goes on sheer to sop up the midday shine, hydrate your skin, and shield it with SPF38. You won’t have to worry about caking on too much product with this one as well.

2. Opt for powdered sunscreen

If you’re not too keen on cushions (I feel you), but would still like to give your sunscreen application a little more heft with the same convenience, then choose a brush-on mineral sunscreen like this one by Peter Thomas Roth. It’s practically formulated like a loose setting powder with the added benefit of an SPF, so you can dust it over your makeup quickly if you’re in a rush. You won’t ruin your brows by doing that, trust us. If you’re looking for an untinted version that’ll provide a matte, soft-focus finish, then Supergoop’s Setting Powder is where it’s at.

3. Mist on your UV protection

Spray-on sunscreens are a godsend for those who literally run away from lotion or cream formulas. Not only do they provide protection, they also act as a makeup setting spray. It may sound a little weird, but if you aren’t fond of a multi-use sunscreen, then you should consider Supergoop’s Setting Mist. You can use it to set your makeup if your foundation doesn’t contain SPF. Feel free to spritz this refreshing mist on any time during the day too.
